Linking your account
When the game needs to know who you are, and the two ways to tell it.
The game prints a link, you confirm it in the browser you are already signed in to, and the two accounts are recorded as the same person. Signing in tells us an email address; nothing in a browser can prove which Minecraft account is yours, so the game is what does it.
Where the link screen appears
Three doors lead to the same screen. Two of them open it at the moment you need it rather than in advance.
- The Fragments button on the Multiplayer screen, which is the way to do it ahead of time.
- Pressing Promote to Fragment while unlinked. The screen opens over the world list, and linking returns you to it with your world still selected.
- Pressing Create with Share as Fragment ticked while unlinked. The world is not created yet; linking brings you back with the box still ticked.
Linking with the browser
Start from the game
In the game/vbf link into chat does the same thing and prints the link there instead, which is useful if you are already in a world.Linking is only needed to create or promote a Fragment.
Joining a friend’s world doesn’t need an account.
Paste your link key (vbf-link-XXXXXXXX):
Doing it from chat
/vbf link prints four lines. The first opens the browser, and the code underneath is there for launchers whose chat cannot.
[VBF] linking new MC account…
1. Click here to confirm: https://fragments.vagabonds.studio/link?code=WREN-SALT
2. Or type code on the site: WREN-SALT
(waiting for confirmation — leave this open)
The legacy key
Mint one from the dashboard and paste it into the field on the link screen. It predates the browser flow and is worth knowing about for one reason: if the machine you play on cannot open a browser at all, a key can be carried to it.
The screen fills the field in for you if a key is already on your clipboard.
What binding means
- One way
- One Minecraft account to one Fragments account. To move to a different Minecraft account, unlink the current one first.
- Unlinking in the game
/vbf link unlinkclears the credentials on that install. You carry on as an ordinary session-verified player, which is enough to join worlds.- Unlinking on the site
- The account page has Unlink Minecraft. Your worlds stay where they are; you cannot open them until something is bound again.
- Per install
- The credentials live on the machine you linked. A second computer links separately, which is what the link keys are named after.
- A name typed in
- The account page can also bind a Minecraft username by hand. That proves the account exists rather than that it is yours, and the page marks it Typed in, unverified until the game proves it properly.
When it does not work
- Expired
- A pairing code has a short life, printed on the page as it counts down. Run
/vbf linkagain for a fresh one. - Not found
- The code was swept after its time, or it has been used. Fresh code.
- Already claimed
- Somebody completed this pairing. If that was not you, mint another one and confirm it quickly.
- Bound elsewhere
- The game says “This account is linked to a different MC user. Unlink on the website first.” One Minecraft account cannot be attached to two Fragments accounts.
- No identity yet
- “No Mojang identity available — restart MC and try again.” The game had not finished signing in to Minecraft when you pressed the button.
Nothing about a failed pairing changes your account. If you are unsure whether it worked, open the link screen again: it says “Already linked as …” when it did.
Running your own
Setting VBF_USER_ID skips this screen altogether if you are not using ours. It is a development arrangement rather than a supported one, mentioned here only because the screen says so at the bottom.
