Creating a world on the site
Describe a world in the dashboard and let the first person to press Play build it.
A world made here does not generate when you press the button. It is written down: a name, the settings the game will use, and a list of mods. The first person to press Play builds it from that description on their own machine. Until then everything about it can still change.
The wizard
Three steps, from Create a Fragment on the dashboard. Nothing is created until the last one.
Describe it
On the siteThe window before anyone plays
This is the only time the seed and the world type can be changed. Changing them later would mean the terrain people have already built on no longer matches the plan that produced it.
- The seed
- The world type
- Anything a mod does to terrain or biomes, which is why the mod list matters most before generation
- The name and description
- Mode, difficulty, hardcore, commands, game rules
- The mod list, which everyone syncs on their next restart
- Who is whitelisted, and whether the link alone admits people
Settings changed after generation apply the next time the world starts, rather than to the session somebody is in right now.
What you get at the end
The success screen carries the world’s link: vbf: followed by four words. That is the whole of what a friend needs to find the world, and it does not change unless you change it. It is on the world’s page afterwards under Settings, so there is no need to write it down now.
They install the mod, open Multiplayer, choose Add Server, and paste it in. The rest is on inviting your friends.
Whitelist, or anyone with the link
- Whitelist required
- The link finds the world; it does not open it. Only people you have named get in, and you name them on the world’s page. This is the default, and the one to keep if the link will be posted anywhere you do not control.
- Anyone with the link
- Whoever holds the link is admitted the first time they join. Easier to hand out, and harder to take back, because taking it back means rotating the link and telling everyone the new one.
Set on the site. There is no in-game control for it, so a host who wants to open a world up does it from the world’s Settings tab.
When it will not create
- At your world cap. An account can own a limited number of worlds at once, and the page says which number you are at. Deleting a world frees the slot. Worlds you have joined never count against it.
- We did not answer. Nothing was created. Try again shortly.
- The mod list or the join setting did not save. The world itself is fine. The page says which of the two it was, and both can be set again from the world’s page.
Starting one in the game instead
Everything here can also be done from inside Minecraft, by ticking a box on the create screen or promoting a world you already play. That is creating a world in the game, and it is the right choice when the world already exists, or when you would rather pick your settings on the screen you know.
