Fragments is a Minecraft mod. Install it and your group runs the world between you, so there is no server to rent. Joining is still a link and a row in the server list.

01The first evening

The evening you already know.

A link in the chat, a row in the server list, a whitelist saying who gets in. An evening here works the way server evenings always have, and it goes differently in three places.

When everyone logs off

When the last of you logs off, the world stops running and stops costing anything. Come back a fortnight later and the save is waiting. A rented server keeps the save too, and bills you for the two idle weeks.

01

One link, and they’re in

They paste it into Add Server and the world sits in their server list from then on. The pack and its size are shown before they commit, and accepting restarts them straight into it. The whitelist decides who is let in, so the link is safe to paste into a group chat.

The pack runs on everyone’s machine

A pack this heavy means an 8GB plan or better if you’re renting one, sized and paid for up front whether you fill it or not. Here the work is shared across whoever is online, so no single machine has to carry the whole pack.

03

Someone quits mid-flight

The regions they were hosting pass to whoever is standing in them. The switch takes under a second, and nobody else's game is interrupted.

02The category

Priced by how much memory your pack needs, billed around the clock, and when it breaks, everyone sets the pack up again by hand.

03Evidence

Built for the heaviest packs.

The heavier the pack, the bigger the difference, because rented prices scale with memory and ours don’t.

Pack weight
777mods, no throttle

The size of pack that needs a 16GB plan on a rented host. Here it runs across the group’s machines, so there is no plan to buy.

Physics under load
Two players, one airship
Authority border · 512 blocks

A ridden, four-body flying ship crossing an authority border, handed over in ~3.2 s. Moving physics is the hardest case to keep in sync, so it is the one we measure.

04What you get

Two ways to keep a world.

The mod runs the world across everyone's machines either way, at the same speed, with the same pack. The difference is only where the saved copy sits when nobody is playing.
