Your first session

What happens between pressing Play and standing in the world with everyone else.

Once you are in, it is Minecraft. There is a handful of differences and two of them are surprising, which is what this page is for.

What the game says when you arrive

A short summary in chat the first time a world boots, so that a problem with storage, or with reaching us, is visible immediately rather than an hour later.

[Vagabond's Fragments] mode summary

Storage: full

Catchup: on

TURN relay: on

Coordinator: coord.vgbnds.cloud

A healthy boot. Anything the mod is unsure about is printed in yellow instead.

A second line appears if the world carried on without you. Crops kept growing and furnaces kept burning, because somebody else was simulating that ground.

[Vagabond's Fragments] While you were away: 14 crop stages grew, 9 items cooked, 3 fuel items used

People arriving and leaving

Announced the way vanilla announces players, in yellow, and only when somebody genuinely arrives. A player who was already there when you joined is not replayed to you as a fresh arrival.

Mira joined the game

Sam left the game

The pause menu does not pause

With nobody else connected, pause behaves normally, because there is nobody else for the world to keep running for.

What is on the pause menu

Two buttons in the bottom-left corner, and neither is always there.

Report a problem
3 mods missing
  1. Opens a form that goes to the people who build this. It is absent when a report could not be filed, which is the system’s way of never offering a button that would fail.
  2. Only when your mods and the world’s do not match. It opens the same screen you were shown on the way in. See packs and mods.
The pause menu with both mod buttons present. Drawn, not a screenshot.

Seeing who is carrying what

/vbf status: how many peers you are connected to, what is flowing between you, and how many regions you are simulating.

You type/vbf status

[VBF] status

mode: mesh

identity: vbfUser=… mojangUuid=…

session: 3 peers · ↑18kbps ↓22kbps · 7 regions

not yet supported: other dimensions, VS2 physics, generic packet routing for untested mods

Shortened. The real output also lists packet kinds and which subsystems you hold.

Holding regions is not a job you are given or can lose track of. You hold the ground you are standing on, and it passes to whoever walks into it next. The rules are set out on how it works.

Messages you may see mid-session

A peer you cannot reach
“couldn’t connect to a peer” with a reason. Two players behind particularly awkward networks can fail to find a route to each other even when both are online.
Removed from the mesh
When exactly one side of an unreachable pair has to leave, the game says so on the disconnect screen and invites you to rejoin. It is not a ban and it is not your fault.
Handed authority away
If your connection is saturated while you are simulating, the mod passes that work to a peer to stop everyone else stuttering, and tells you it did.
Banned or removed while playing
You are disconnected from the others and told which of the two happened. Your copy of the world stays on your disk.
The world was deleted
Your save is no longer attached to anything shared. The game says so and you carry on playing a solo copy.

What is not supported yet

  • Sharing is the Overworld for now. The Nether and the End are on the list and are not done.
  • Some physics mods move things in ways the mesh does not yet mirror faithfully. /vbf status prints the current list of exceptions, which is the honest place to look rather than a page that can go stale.
  • A world with nobody in it is not kept running. It sleeps until somebody comes back.
